Honoring Pauahi's legacy, uplifting Hawaiians
Kamehameha Schools was founded in 1887 through the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop to provide education for Native Hawaiians. Its admissions policy honors that legacy by supporting students from Hawai‘i’s Native community and helping preserve Hawaiian culture. As a private trust that does not receive federal funding, Kamehameha Schools operates independently to fulfill Pauahi’s vision of educational opportunity and community uplift.
Kamehameha Schools is not about excluding students arbitrarily. It was established to remedy historic inequities and provide educational opportunities to Native Hawaiians, who historically faced systemic denial of access to education and cultural resources. Unlike schools that discriminate to maintain privilege or segregation, Kamehameha Schools’ admissions policy is mission-driven: it preserves Hawaiian culture, strengthens the community, and honors Pauahi’s vision — not to unfairly exclude others.

It is incumbent upon all who believe in justice, equity, and self-determination to defend Princess Pauahi’s legacy and condemn efforts to erase the progress Native Hawaiians have fought for over generations. We call upon our community, allies, and all who stand for indigenous rights to reject this harmful narrative and to speak clearly and boldly.
Princess Pauahi’s will must be protected. Our trusts must be respected. Our futures must be self-determined.
